One of the many queen cells this season

This beekeeping season has been one of the most difficult I have had so far.

After such a wet winter, I was relieved to see one of my colonies come through into spring looking strong. The weather had made things hard, and like many beekeepers, I had been keeping a close eye on the hives and hoping they would make it through.

When spring arrived, that one strong colony gave us a real sense of optimism. The bees were active, the colony was building, and it felt like the season was finally starting to move in the right direction.

But beekeeping has a way of keeping you grounded.

Through April and May, I had several queen losses. It was frustrating and, at times, disheartening. Every time it looked like the colony was settling, something else seemed to knock it back. Queen issues can change the whole direction of a season, and it meant we had to be patient, keep checking, and give the bees the best chance to recover.

There were definitely moments when it felt like the season might get away from me. A wet winter, followed by queen problems in spring, is not the start any beekeeper hopes for. But the bees kept going, and so did I.

Thankfully, things are now looking much more positive. The colony is getting stronger, the bees are building well, and we have finally managed to take the first batch of honey.

After everything the colony has been through, that first honey feels extra special. It is not just honey in a jar. It represents resilience, patience, and the reminder that beekeeping rarely follows a neat plan.

This season has shown me again that working with bees means accepting the highs and the setbacks. Some years are easy, and some ask a lot more from you. But when you see the colony recovering and taste that first honey, it makes all the difficult moments worth it.
